The Coega bridge is aimed at becoming the south entrance gate to the new Coega development planned along the see shore. The competition called for a two double lanes bridge to span 200m over a see salt-bed estuary. Considering the flatness of the surrounding landscape and the ambition of the new development, we proposed an asymmetric cable stayed featuring a single tall tower, anonymous thought provoking element. The cigar shape gives the tower autonomy as object, as a self-centred totem which resonates as a white page with the near and far surrounding. It is the bud of the new development.
Being project designer of this option, I accompanied Halcrow’s engineers in South Africa to present the project to the competition
