Teaming with Babtie Group for this competition, we investigated a structure that could assist the separation between cyclists and pedestrians, and could span without effort the 22m of the river in an efficient and smooth-flowing movement, echoing the river itself. The proposed double curvature ribbon bridge uses the beam depth to divide the deck between cyclist in a bottom area, and pedestrian overlooking them and the river. It enlarges in the middle to create a public space over the river and to link the two levels with seating steps. Bent to arrive parallel to the bank on one side and perpendicular to the flood plain on the other, it links the opposite banks in a simple, dynamic and elegant gesture. The L-shaped structure is of steel and mesh relying upon the main steel elements for it’s structural action and on the mesh skin for it’s stiffness and strength.
